What is a laparoscopic gastric bypass?

This procedure administers a two-pronged approach to expedite weight loss. The small stomach pouch created in this procedure limits food intake, while an intestinal bypass reduces the number of calories absorbed by your body. This combination aids in significant weight loss and improved overall health.

According to the National Institute of Health, Benefits of Laparoscopic gastric bypass include:

  • Substantial weight reduction occurs following the procedure; 60% of excess weight is lost.
  • Decrease in hunger producing hormones
  • Long term resolution of obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea
  • Increased mobility and energy

Let our bariatric surgery expert explain more about this procedure.

How is a laparoscopic gastric bypass performed?

During this procedure, a small pouch is created at the top of the stomach using surgical staples. This smaller stomach is then skillfully connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine, bypassing the excised piece of stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine.
