What is minimally invasive surgery?

Advances in minimally invasive surgery allow United Regional surgeons to perform many procedures through one or more small incisions, rather than a single large incision used in traditional open surgery. This approach reduces trauma to the body while maintaining excellent surgical outcomes.

For many patients, minimally invasive techniques may result in:

  • Less postoperative pain
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster recovery times
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Smaller scars
  • In some cases, improved overall outcomes

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a commonly used minimally invasive technique. During the procedure, the surgeon inserts an endoscope—a long, thin tube with a lighted camera—through a small incision. The camera sends a high‑definition, two‑dimensional image to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to view the surgical area throughout the operation.

Specialized surgical instruments are then placed through the same incision or through additional small incisions to complete the procedure safely and precisely.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery

United Regional also offers robotic‑assisted surgery performed by surgeons who are certified in robotic techniques. Robotic technology provides a magnified, three‑dimensional view of the surgical site and enhances the surgeon’s precision, flexibility, and control beyond what is possible with standard laparoscopic tools.

Potential benefits of robotic‑assisted surgery for patients include:

  • Less blood loss
  • Reduced postoperative pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Minimal scarring
