What is endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure that uses a flexible tube equipped with a light and camera to examine the digestive tract. There are several different forms of endoscopy used to examine various areas of the body. To ensure the highest quality of care, a referral from your primary care provider is required before scheduling an appointment.
Various forms of endoscopy:
- Capsule endoscopy/pill cam procedure
Capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive procedure that allows physicians to examine the small intestine using a camera about the size of a vitamin. After the capsule is swallowed, it travels through the digestive tract, capturing thousands of images to help detect ulcers, polyps, or tumors.
- Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a procedure used to examine the inner lining of the large intestine (colon and rectum). A flexible endoscope is inserted through the rectum to identify inflammation, ulcers, polyps, or signs of colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy is commonly used for routine cancer screening and to investigate symptoms such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or changes in bowel habits. Sedation is typically provided to ensure patient comfort during the procedure.
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography
Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized procedure that combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts — tubes that carry digestive fluids. A flexible endoscope is guided through the mouth and into the small intestine, where contrast dye is injected to highlight the bile and pancreatic ducts on X-ray. ERCP may be used to remove gallstones, place stents, or take tissue samples for further analysis.
- Endoscopic ultrasound
Endoscopic ultrasound combines endoscopy with ultrasound imaging to evaluate structures within and around the digestive tract. A small ultrasound probe and biopsy needle are inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus. This technique allows physicians to locate lymph nodes and collect tissue samples for biopsy, aiding in the diagnosis and staging of certain cancers and other conditions.
- Esophageal manometry
Esophageal manometry is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the function and movement of the esophagus. Performed by an endoscopy nurse, this test helps identify conditions such as swallowing disorders (dysphagia) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A thin, flexible catheter is gently inserted through the nose and into the esophagus to measure muscle contractions and relaxation. Some patients may experience brief discomfort or gagging, which typically subsides quickly. The test takes approximately 30 minutes.
- Upper endoscopy
Also known as EGD, allows physicians to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine. A thin, flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth to identify conditions such as ulcers, inflammation, tumors, or bleeding. EGD is often recommended for patients experiencing symptoms like persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained upper abdominal pain.
