Sleeve Gastrectomy
Bariatric surgery can be your pathway to improved health when diet and exercise aren’t enough to reach an appropriate weight. The laparoscopic (lap) sleeve gastrectomy is another method that our expert bariatric surgeons can utilize to improve your quality of life.
Choose United Regional for your Lap Sleeve Gastrectomy
Minimally invasive procedures performed by our bariatric surgery experts can help you achieve long-term relief from obesity related health problems. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy allows for a more direct procedure and faster recovery without the implantation of an artificial device.
What is a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
A laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy involves the separation and removal of part the stomach, leaving a small remainder to connect the esophagus to the small intestines. Since this operation does not involve any re-routing or reconnection of the intestines, it is a less complex operation than the laparoscopic gastric bypass. This procedure also eliminates the need for any abdominal implants.
Benefits of the lap sleeve gastrectomy include:
- Lowers the hunger hormone, ghrelin
 - Performed in approximately 35 minutes
 - Can be performed on high-risk patients, including those who have had prior bariatric surgeries
 - No risk of dumping syndrome
 - Nutrients are absorbed normally
 - Less risk of ulcers and bowel blockage
 - Improvement or resolution of co-morbid conditions
 - Covered by most insurances, including Medicare
 - Minimal time off work, usually about 5-7 days

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP)
In 2024, United Regional’s Bariatric Surgery Center received re-accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Accredited Centers participate in a rigorous evaluation process that documents the comprehensiveness of the program and meets established program requirements for providing safe bariatric surgical care with excellent short- and long-term outcomes.
How is the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy performed?
During this procedure, our bariatric surgeon uses a stapling device to create a vertical “sleeve” of stomach, roughly the size and shape of a banana, before removing the remainder. The fundus (which secretes ghrelin, a hormone that makes a person feel hungry) of the stomach is also removed. Along with a smaller stomach, this reduction of hormone production helps you feel full after eating smaller meals.
