Patrick Roughneen, MD

Dr. Patrick T. Roughneen is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with United Regional Physician Group.

Dr. Roughneen began his studies in biochemistry at the University of Glasgow before earning his medical degree at the University of Leicester in England. He completed his general surgery training and research fellowship at the University of Texas in Houston, followed by a cardiac surgery fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. He specialized in congenital heart surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and later completed his Master of Business Administration degree in Healthcare at the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Roughneen’s passion for cardiac surgery began as a medical student, inspired by the complexity and impact of heart operations. He is known for his expertise in cardiac valve surgery, adult congenital heart disease, aneurysm surgery, mechanical circulatory support, and transplantation. As a clinical professor at the University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine, he is dedicated to education, advancing the field through research, and serving in leadership roles with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Having performed thousands of surgeries, Dr. Roughneen is committed to guiding patients and their families through every step of their care. He values clear communication, encourages questions, and fosters a collaborative, compassionate environment.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Roughneen enjoys golf, tennis, and time at the gym. He is married to Cherie, a former cardiac nurse, and has a daughter and granddaughter.
