physician group

Dr. Brett May is a board certified general surgeon with United Regional Physician Group.

Dr. May completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin and Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX, before earning his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. He went on to complete his internship and residency training at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX, where he gained broad experience in general surgery and developed a strong foundation in comprehensive patient care.

Dr. May’s interest in medicine began early, driven by a natural aptitude for math and science, and was solidified through hands on experience during a summer internship at the former General Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX. While rotating through surgery, the recovery room, and the emergency department, he discovered a passion for medicine that offered both intellectual challenge and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives. Having grown up in Wichita Falls, Dr. May values the opportunity to care for the community he proudly calls home. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. May serves as Chair of the Department of Surgery, Assistant Trauma Medical Director, Secretary and Treasurer of the United Regional Health Care System Medical Staff, Chief Medical Information Officer, and a member of the United Regional Health Care System Board of Directors.

As a general surgeon, Dr. May is drawn to the unique ability of surgery to treat and, in many cases, cure disease through operative intervention. He values general surgery for the opportunity it provides to be a well rounded physician, managing complex medical conditions while performing critical and life saving procedures. Throughout his career, he has played a key role in expanding access to advanced surgical care in Wichita Falls, including the development of endovascular aortic surgery, laparoscopic bariatric surgery, and ongoing advancements in minimally invasive and trauma related surgical care. His approach is grounded in experience, collaboration, and a deep understanding of patients gained not only as a physician, but also as a caregiver and patient himself.

Outside of medicine, Dr. May enjoys spending time with his wife and their two dachshunds at their lake home, where he often takes on home improvement projects and enjoys learning new skills. He and his wife also enjoy traveling by RV to visit their children and grandchildren across the country. Dr. May remains deeply connected to Wichita Falls, appreciating its small town feel, strong sense of community, and proximity to larger metropolitan amenities, all while continuing his lifelong commitment to caring for the people of North Texas.
