Healthy You: United Regional’s new neurosurgeon, Dr. Bailey Yekzaman

United Regional is adding a new neurosurgeon to its care team. Dr. Bailey Yekzaman talks about what she plans to bring to Wichita Falls in medical care.

Dr. Yekzaman spent most of her life in Wichita – not Wichita Falls but Wichita, Kansas where she began her medical career, before discovering a passion for neurosurgery.

“When I tried neurosurgery, since I heard the word neuro and figured I might think it was interesting, I fell in love with it. And my whole life I’ve done things with my hands. I was classically trained as a musician and piano and violin, and so I really liked the application of using my hands and fixing problems for patients in that way,” Yekzaman said.

After exploring several options, she would eventually make her way to Wichita Falls.

“We wanted something smaller than where we were in Kansas City, a really nice community to join and raise our children. I have two little girls, a four-year-old and a 16-month-old, and I wanted somewhere to go for them to stay and grow up. A community that we felt like these are our people. And that’s exactly how we felt when we came to visit Wichita Falls,” Yekzaman said.

She felt that same sense of belonging when she met with United Regional officials.

“I wanted to be in a smaller community with great communication between providers. I think this is such a unique place in that we have a stellar hospital system and excellent neurosurgical care, but we hold ourselves to very high standards that come with something in an academic center in a bigger populated area but we have the advantage of being able to pick up the phone and call one another, directly, communicate about patients and provide better care in that way,” Yekzaman said.

Better care that she’s adding to with her unique surgical skill set.

“I was very lucky. I was trained in robotics for the seven years of my training in Kansas City. So spine robotics – I’m excited to be able to bring it to United Regional. It will allow for more minimally invasive surgeries- faster, less painful, and hopefully out of the hospital quicker. I also did a lot of minimally invasive training, which will be very helpful again in getting people feeling better faster and out of the hospital quicker,” Yekzaman said.

With her expertise in minimally invasive procedures and spine robotics, she wants the community and her patients to know they’ll receive her medical care for years to come.

“I hope that the community knows that I came with the intention of staying. I really came to bring my family here and raise my children here. I want people to know that I’m here to add to the community and hopefully help it grow. And I also want people, when they come and see me, to know that I care deeply about my patients. They’re gaining a teammate when they come and see me. Even if I cannot solve their problem, I really work hard to help them find the people that can, and that I won’t leave anyone behind. I really care deeply about my patients,” Yekzaman said.

United Regional continues to improve its impact on Wichita Falls and surrounding communities.
